Course objectives:
This course focuses on EU terminology; the main objective is to define and apply EU legal concepts; to develop know-how to use on-line tools (e.g. databases: EurLex, IATE) as well as to carry out independent research and use legal literature in German; to analyse case law in German; to use adequate EU legal terminology in German; to raise awareness about EU multilingualism and its repercussions for legal interpretation
Course content:
- Language policy of the European Union (EU law, multilingualism, equal authenticity, legal certainty)
- Introduction into Terminology: Fundamental terminological principles
- Databases (EurLex, IATE, Eurovoc)
- Analysis of EU legal acts
- Analysis of legal rules and multilingual drafting
- Analysis of judgements of the Court of Justice of the EU
- The multilingual approach of the Court of Justice of the EU
