On 9 and 10 April, the now traditional two-day conference titled \u201cLegal Challenges in Tourism \u2013 Student Work under Student Contracts: Rights and Obligations\u201d<\/em> was successfully held. The conference was dedicated to current legal issues in the tourism sector, with this year\u2019s particular focus on student work and its everyday practical application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference was organised by the Student Union of the Faculty of Law in Rijeka, in cooperation with the Student Union of the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management in Opatija. The event brought together a large number of students, professionals, and institutional representatives, enabling an exchange of knowledge and experiences from different perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the first day, held at the Faculty of Law in Rijeka, a panel discussion titled \u201cWho Works and Who Pays?\u201d<\/em> opened a series of key questions related to student work in tourism. The discussion covered the perspectives of employers, students, and institutions, with participants addressing the central question of whether student work represents a challenge that requires additional regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stipe Grgi\u0107, Operations Director at GoOpti, speaking from the employer\u2019s perspective, emphasised that student work is an important support for business operations, particularly in seasonal tourism activities. However, he also highlighted challenges arising from frequent misunderstandings regarding contractual provisions and the insufficient awareness of students about their rights and obligations. On the other hand, Kristian Ton\u010di\u0107, representing the student perspective, pointed to the most common issues students face and stressed the need for additional education on student work and appropriate responses to irregularities, as well as the importance of timely communication with competent institutions. Iva Benuli\u0107, representing the Student Centre in Rijeka, underlined the role of the Student Centre as an intermediary between students and employers and its contribution to the protection of students\u2019 rights. The panellists agreed that the key challenges lie in balancing employers\u2019 needs with students\u2019 rights, alongside the need for a clearer legislative framework that would equally protect both contractual parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the second day, at the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management in Opatija, an interactive workshop titled \u201cStudent Work: The Relationship between Student and Employer\u201d<\/em> was held in cooperation with the Law Office of Ivan Primorac. The session was led by attorney Ivan Primorac and trainee lawyer Marija Antonia Zubalj, who used practical examples to further clarify the legal framework of student work and highlight the most common situations and challenges faced by both students and employers. Through the interactive workshop, students also learned how to independently identify and address such issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference once again confirmed the importance of connecting academia and practice, particularly in the tourism sector, which continues to evolve and face new legal challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
