The “AI Law & Society” symposium was held on 16 and 17 October 2026 at the Inter-University Centre (IUC) in Dubrovnik. It was co-organised by the Faculty of Law of the University of Rijeka, the University of Birmingham, the University of Sarajevo, and the Institute of Criminology at the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana. The symposium aimed to bring together researchers and doctoral students working on the legal and societal challenges of artificial intelligence, providing them with an opportunity to present their research and exchange ideas.
Assoc. Prof. Stjepan Gadžo, Vice-Dean for International Cooperation at the Faculty of Law in Rijeka, participated in the symposium as one of its programme directors. Two research assistants from our Faculty also presented their work. Viktorija Pisačić presented her research on the use of artificial intelligence in tax proceedings, as part of the activities of the project “Fair Taxation in the Digital Environment: Theoretical Foundations and Normative Solutions (FAIRTAX).” Eva Ružić presented her research on the use of artificial intelligence in public procurement procedures, as part of the activities of the project “Legal and Ethical Implications of the Dehumanisation of the Judiciary and Public Administration through Legal Technology.” Both projects are funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU, under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
The participation of our faculty members and research assistants in the symposium contributed to the international exchange of knowledge and experience on current legal challenges posed by artificial intelligence and laid the foundations for new forms of international cooperation.
