Human Rights Summer School in Novi Vinodolski
The Human Rights Summer School in Novi Vinodolski, a town where one of the most important cultural monuments of the Croatian people was adopted, as well as one of the significant European medieval documents (the Vinodol Code of 1288), was first organized in 2007.
It gathers around 25 students each year from Croatian law faculties in Osijek, Rijeka, Split, and Zagreb, as well as the Faculty of Law in Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina). The Summer School serves as a forum for discussing the protection of human rights both at the regional and national levels, as well as for acquiring the professional knowledge and skills needed by future lawyers to improve the protection of human rights in their home countries.
The primary goal of the Summer School is to familiarize students with the provisions of the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, as well as the practice of the European Court of Human Rights. Every year, respected domestic and international experts participate as lecturers, including professors from Croatian and foreign law faculties, as well as judges from the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court of the Republic of Croatia.
EU Law and Economy Summer School (ELESS)
The holder of the EU Law and Economy Summer School (ELESS) is the Faculty of Law in Rijeka, and it is carried out in cooperation with the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management in Ika and and the Hanns Seidel Foundation. It is the first lifelong learning program implemented jointly by two constituent units of the University, featuring an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the European Union in the fields of law and economics.
The program is delivered in the form of a summer school through two courses, i.e. integrated modules: Legal Aspects of the European Union and Socio-Economic Aspects of the European Union. Within each module, lectures and interactive workshops on various topics are held. This summer school aims to respond to the identified need for studying EU law and economics through a specialized lifelong learning program.
The program is designed to connect these two disciplines and is focused on issues of practical application that facilitate the realization of all the benefits arising from full EU membership, both from the perspective of the state and the individual. It brings together various topics related to the process of European integration and examines them from multiple perspectives, providing participants with practical and applicable knowledge and skills necessary for everyday life and business within the EU internal market. The program is conducted in English and allows enrollment of participants from other EU Member States and the wider region, thereby strengthening regional cooperation and enhancing the visibility of the University of Rijeka. Upon completion, participants acquire knowledge (factual and theoretical) and skills (cognitive) that enable them to understand, analyze, present, and apply advanced concepts of EU law and economics in a business environment and everyday life. The program was launched in 2018, and so far it has been attended by around 50 students from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, and Italy.
