Our distinguished researchers are awarded with the Faculty’s annual research awards in two categories: the Award for Research Excellence and the Award for the Best Research Paper in a Foreign Journal. The procedure and criteria for awarding are defined by the Decision on Research Awards of the Faculty of Law in Rijeka.
Awards for Research Excellence
2023 – Prof. Dr. Edita Čulinović-Herc
The Research Excellence Award for 2023 was awarded to Professor Edita Čulinović-Herc for her overall contribution to scientific research activities at the Faculty, particularly for successfully completing the UNIRI project “Legal Aspects of Companies Restructuring and Transition Towards New Corporate Governance Culture”, which ran from 2019 to 2023. The project concluded with a final conference “Companies at a Crossroad – A Way Forward”, held on 10 November 2023 and organized by the Faculty and under the patronage of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU).
2021 – Prof. Dr. Sanja Barić
The Research Excellence Award for 2021 was awarded to Professor Sanja Barić for her overall contribution to scientific research activities at the Faculty, particularly for her participation in the project co-financed by the EU HORIZON2020 Program Supporting and Implementing Plans for Gender Equality in Academia and Research – SPEAR.
2020 – Prof. Dr. Sandra Winkler
The Research Excellence Award for 2020 was presented to Professor Sandra Winkler for her overall contribution to scientific research activities at the Faculty, particularly for her participation in the project co-financed by the EU Justice Program: “Personalized Solutions in European Family and Succession Law – PSEFS”. In addition, in 2020, she participated in two other projects: the international project “Enabling Consumer to Become Prosumer in the Energy Transition Era – ECPE”, and the UNIRI project “Digital Transformation of Society: Legal Aspects”.
2019 – Prof. Dr. Ivana Kunda
The Research Excellence Award for 2019 was presented to Professor Ivana Kunda for her overall contribution to scientific research activities at the Faculty, particularly for her successful leadership and participation in several projects in 2019, including four projects funded by the EU Justice Program: Diversity of Enforcement Titles in Cross-Border Debt Collection in the EU – EU_En4s, Train to enforce – Train2 EN4CE, Personalized Solution in European Family and Succession Law –PSEFS i Facilitating Cross-Border Family Life: Towards a Common European Understanding – EUFams II.
2018 – Prof. Dr. Edita Čulinović-Herc
The Research Excellence Award for 2018 was presented to Professor Edita Čulinović-Herc for her overall contribution to scientific research activities at the Faculty, particularly for successfully completing the project funded by the Croatian Science Foundation (HRZZ) “Legal Aspects of Corporate Acquisitions and Knowledge-Driven Companies’ Restructuring”, which ran from February 2015 to January 2019.

2022 – Assist. Prof. Dr. Stjepan Gadžo
The Award for the Best Research Paper in a Foreign Journal in 2022 was given to Assistant Professor Stjepan Gadžo for his article (co-authored with Šime Jozipović and Marko Perkušić) “Tax Compliance in the Era of Cryptocurrencies and CBDCs: The End of the Right to Privacy or No Reason for Concern?”, published in EC Tax Review, 31(2022) 1: 16–29, https://doi.org/10.54648/ecta2022003.
2021 – Assist. Prof. Dr. Marko Mrakovčić
The Award for the Best Research Paper in a Foreign Journal in 2021 was given to Assistant Professor Marko Mrakovčić for his article (co-authored with Danilo Vuković) “Legitimacy, Independence and Impartiality: How do Serbian and Croatian Legal Professionals Assess Their Judiciaries?”, published in Europe-Asia Studies, 74 (2022) 6: 945-967.
2020 – Assist. Prof. Dr. Martina Bajčić i Katja Dobrić Basaneže
The Award for the Best Research Paper in a Foreign Journal in 2020 was given to Assistant Professor Martina Bajčić and Katja Basaneže for their article “Considering foreignization and domestication in EU legal translation: a corpus-based study”, published in Perspectives: Studies in Translatology, 29 (2020) 5: 706-721, doi:10.1080/0907676X.2020.1794016.
2019 – Assist. Prof. Dr. Petra Perišić
The Award for the Best Research Paper in a Foreign Journal in 2019 was given to Assistant Professor Petra Perišić for her article “Intervention by invitation – when can consent from a host state justify foreign military intervention?”, published in the Russian Law Journal, 7 (2019), 4: 4-29.
2018 – Assist. Prof. Dr. Vanja Smokvina
The Award for the Best Research Paper in a Foreign Journal in 2018 was given to Assistant Professor Vanja Smokvina for her article “Trasformazione del diritto del lavoro in Croazia dal 1990 fino ad oggi (passando per l’Unione europea)”, published in Lavoro e diritto, 32 (2018) 3: 545-566.
