Chairs

Chairs are the teaching organisational units at the Faculty, which include related courses.
 
A chair gathers teachers and assistants who take part in teaching the courses within the chair. The duties of each chair are: organising teaching, research and professional activities for all chair courses; preparing drafts of course curricula; improving teaching at the Faculty; providing textbooks, handbooks, and other teaching materials and aids; taking account of lecturers, assistants, and researchers and their professional and scientific training; taking account of student achievement.

Members of the Chair hold classes at the Integrated Undergraduate and Graduate University Study of Law, the Postgraduate Doctoral Study Programme in the field of Social Sciences, the subject of Law, and the Undergraduate Professional Study Programme in Administrative Studies.

Also, members of the Chair are engaged in scientific and highly qualified work by participating at international and national scientific and professional conferences and meetings, and organising international and national scientific and professional conferences and meetings. In addition to organising and preparing classes for the courses conducted by the Chair, its members are actively contributing to the development of science with the publications of their scientific and professional papers.

Certainly, it should be noted that the members of the Chair are actively involved in the work of groups preparing legal texts, government bodies, professional associations and other organisations at the local (regional), national and international level whereby they are contributing to the improvement of their competences, the popularisation of science, as well as solving current social questions from the field of labour and social law.

The members of the Chair have organized numerous events and conferences in the interdisciplinary field of law and language. Most notably, in collaboration with the Ministry of European Integration of the Republic of Croatia, the Chair has organised the first conference in Croatia on the topic of legal translation and the translation of EU legislation in 2000, and in light of the Croatian accession to the EU, in 2013 on legal issues in EU law. Owing to the international reputation of the long-term Head of the Chair, Prof. Dr. Susan Šarčević, the conferences gathered many renowned law and language scholars and resulted in prolific publications.

Prof. Dr. Susan Šarčević was the principal researcher on the following projects: Strategies for Translating the EU acquis (Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sport), Croatian Terms for EU Legal Concepts in cooperation with the Institute for Croatian Language and Linguistics (funded by the Croatian Science Foundation). Members of the Chair participated in the international Tempus project: Foreign languages in the field of law; Training action for legal practitioners: linguistic skills and translation in EU competition law (HT.4983/SI2.738977) funded by the European Commission, Dynamicity of Specialized Knowledge Categories(funded by the Croatian Science Foundation), UIP-2017-05-1769, Training services for the improvement of general and specific knowledge and skills of civil servants working in EU affairs (funded by ESF), Legal Aspects of the Digital Transformation of the Society (UNIRI).

Members of the Chair are editors and authors of scientific monographs, book chapters and papers in international journals.

It should be noted that the members of the Chair are actively involved in the work of groups preparing legal texts, government bodies, professional associations and other organisations at the local (regional), national and international level. Through their work the members of the Chair are continuously improving their competences by participating in programmes of lifelong learning as well as by taking part in frequent research visits at renowned international institutions.

Awards and acknowledgments are a testament that through their work they are contributing to the popularisation of science as well as connecting science with economy, and achieving valuable social goals. In the academic year 2006/2007, Assist Prof. Ivana Kunda, Ph.D., was the recipient of the Award of the Foundation of the University of Rijeka for special merits in scientific research, teaching and public activities, which had the purpose of promoting, disseminating and applying scientific research results. In 2010/2011, Assist. Prof. Emilia Mišćenić, Ph.D., winner of the annual National Award for Science and Scientific Novices in the field of social sciences in 2010, also became the recipient of the Award of the Foundation of the University of Rijeka.

Members of the Chair have launched and organised the International scientific conference Petar Šarčević, and Prof. Vesna Tomljenović, Ph.D., member of the Chair, has become the first Croatian judge of the General Court of the European Union and the president of the Croatian Comparative Law Association, established by the Chair.
